National Loosen Up, Lighten Up Day!
At first glance, this holiday was sort of interesting. LOOSEN UP! LIGHTEN UP! Maybe this is what the society-at-large desperately needs. Giving this idea a little more thought, I am forced to agree people in general need to loosen their grip on daily living and enjoy life as it comes our way. In our overly politicized culture, a person has to be very careful how they express themselves due to the acute sensitivity of their fellow human beings around them. Something as seemingly innocent as a benign statement of, "You look nice today!" could be taken as sexist. Or in describing someone as the Asian co-worker from the rice paddies of Vietnam could come across as racist. Certainly I need to respect and provide courtesy for those around me, but quite honestly people need to stop wearing their emotions on their shirt-sleeves. Another example of taking life too seriously is missing the point of a joke and explaining it in order to show how intellectually superior a person is. If people get the joke and laugh as a result, then...news flash!...no one needs to have the joke explained. Too much more of this type of behavior and society will turn in to what it already has...a place where the minority ruins it for the majority. Whatever happened to the majority rules while respecting the minority rights. (In using the word minority, again I'm not talking about race. The previous sentence is another great example of loosening our grip on taking life too seriously.) Well folks, have a great day, and remember to loosen up and lighten up.
