International Winter Bike to Work Day
As crazy as Fort Worth weather has been, one would be hard pressed to believe it is technically winter-time. The temperatures have been a roller-coaster of unpredictability: 50's one day, with 70 and 80 degree weather the next. Even though Mother Nature is apparently moody, I do wish to highlight today's obscure holiday. Yes, today is International Winter Bike to Work Day. Depending upon what time of day you head to work, you may still need to check out special clothing designed for cold temperatures. Keep in mind, the wind plays a key role in how cold it feels, versus what the actual thermometer reads. (Called wind chill in case you didn't know.) Years ago, upon first moving to Fort Worth, my bicycle was the only source of transportation to and from work and around town running errands. I didn't even have the discretionary money for the public bus. How sad! Anyway, when winter arrived, I visited the local Performance Bicycle shop for some base lining. These are special clothes designed to insulate body heat and to ward off the chill of the wind and cold. Among these, was a pull-over for my head. This was the most interesting aspect of the purchase. I almost looked like a bank robber with this thing on. The article of clothing had a small slit for breathing, and of course two holes for the eyes. And let me tell you, this stuff was very effective...wow! In addition to the base lining, think smart about the rest of your apparel. Just because you have on the base lining doesn't mean you can sport a t-shirt and shorts. Also remember, the base lining is only the start in dressing the part for proper bicycling attire. There is so much more out there you can utilize while you enjoy your ride. Whether your work commute is a few blocks or a few miles, honor this holiday by riding your bicycle to work. I would enjoy hearing a few of the commute stories. Please share at the bottom of the post.
