National Day of Service
Service work is a great act of love performed for another person. To view the needs of and to help someone else doesn't have to take place through a high-profile charitable organization. In fact, I prefer to act alone in my love for and to help a friend or possibly a stranger. To take the Lone Ranger mentality one step further, I often desire to perform service work anonymously. This keeps my ego in check, insuring I don't take any credit away from the One who deserves it...God Himself. It is only by my relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ I can in any way step out of my selfishness for any length of time to aid someone else. What is service work, and what does it look like? The great thing about becoming of service, is it can involve anything. Cutting a yard, baby-sitting kids, buying food or grocery shopping for a shut-in, visiting someone who thinks they are forgotten, bringing a smile to someone having a bad day, and so much more. The list is endless. Service work in action looks for the initiative in taking the love of Jesus to others. Many people, myself included, won't ask for help, or will wait till the circumstances are dire before doing so. This doesn't mean I trample on the wishes of those I am helping. To help someone, I must still remain sensitive to who they are and how they feel. At the end of the day, blessing someone restores and fortifies their faith in God. How will you be of service today?
