New Friends Day
Honestly, I find it very difficult to make new friends in today's culture. People are so self-absorbed in to making themselves feel good, they can't see beyond their own gratification. For example, as a route merchandiser I am constantly in and out of many different stores throughout the course of any given day. Naturally I am overly friendly, maybe to a fault. However, I am shocked in to reality of how blatantly rude people are. The old axiom of speaking when spoken to is left out in the cold. One such person asked if I knew him, which I thought was irrelevant. Every individual, regardless whether or not I know the person, should receive the social courtesy of a good morning or a hardy greeting. There is no excuse for social rudeness. In spite of all this, I will remain diligent in speaking to people in an attempt to gain some sense of community from those around me. This is especially important in the context of the church. As believers in Jesus Christ, the concept of community is essential and biblical. We need each other. No man is an island as we are all inter-connected. The challenge for today is to greet each person you come in contact with. In addition, don't think it strange when someone you don't know wishes you a good morning or afternoon. Who knows, maybe you will make a new friend today. Good luck!
