Random Poetry Day

**In honor of the holiday, I selected a poem by Walt Whitman.** Beat! beat! drums! -- blow! bugles! blow! Through the windows -- through doors -- burst like a ruthless force, Into the solemn church, and scatter the congregation, Into the school where the scholar is studying; Leave not the bridegroom quiet -- no happiness must he have now with his bride, Nor the peaceful farmer any peace, ploughing his field or gathering his grain, So fierce you whirr an pound you drums -- so shrill you bugles blow. Beat! beat! drums! -- blow! bugles! blow! Over the traffic of cities -- over the rumble of wheels in the streets; Are beds prepared for sleepers at night in the houses? no sleepers must sleep in those beds, No bargainers bargains by day -- no brokers or speculators -- would they continue? Would the talkers be talking? would the singer attempt to sing? Would the lawyer rise in the court to state his case before the judge? Then rattle quicker, heavier drums -- you bugles wilder blow. Beat! beat! drums! -- blow! bugles! blow! Make no parley -- stop for no expostulation, Mind not the timid -- mind not the weeper or prayer, Mind not the old man beseeching the young man, Let not the child's voice be heard, nor the mother's entreaties, Make even the trestles to shake the dead where they lie awaiting the hearses, So strong you thump O terrible drums -- so loud you bugles blow.

The Nightmare is Over

A little over a week ago, I finished working at Ole Grapevine Cigar & Tobacco Shop for a second tour of duty.  Once again, I found this particular place of employment extremely toxic and dysfunctional.  With the exception of one other staff member, the crew at the shop were too chummy with one another in very unhealthy ways.  Similar to the first experience, I was micro-managed and isolated from feeling a part of the "family", as the manager liked to call the company.  I never felt included...only taken advantage of and then made to feel inferior and worthless.  The customer base wasn't too much better than the work environment.  In some ways, the customers were worse...a bunch of entitled, rich people who wanted their way while everyone else be damned.  Spoiled-rotten brats!  The manager summarily decided, without even consulting me, that I would be moved to an "on call" position.  Since I'm not naive, I realize this means I'll never wor...

Happy Arbor Day!

What a wonderful way to follow-up Earth Day by having Arbor Day.  The history behind both holidays are fascinating, but too much to include in this blog.  (I would have to write page upon page to adequately discuss the histories of both.)  In a nutshell, the holiday promotes the planting of trees to further strengthen the Earth's ecosystem, as well as to bolster Mother Nature's hold against the negative industrial and technological advances in the present day and age.  As stewards of this wonderful planet we live on, I am in full agreement concerning our roles and responsibilities.  However, I would like to press further into the heart of the issue for what I believe is really at stake.  Planting a tree is an investment which pays off in the long-term.  So is investing in spiritual concepts and higher-level principles.  There is always more than meets the eye, other occurrences than what we can perceive through our five sense.  Similar to nee...

Hand of Providence

God is my ultimate Provider and the Lover of my soul.  He never ceases to bless my life with rich abundance.  After a week's "vacation" in between jobs, I started a new form of employment last Monday.  It is with Retail Merchandising Solutions, Inc., or R.M.S.I. for short.  A few years ago, I worked for TNG, one of their sister companies.  On occasion I would cross-over to help with the store resets for R.M.S.I.  Now I'm fully employed with the company.  The schedule is Monday through Friday starting at five o'clock in the morning.  The shift is over when the work is accomplished.  This could mean 10 a.m., 1 p.m., or who knows when.  In addition to the great schedule, I am also making $12.75 per hour, much more than the previous few jobs I had been working.  From what I understand, I will become eligible for benefits after thirty days.  I am blessed beyond measure!  The first week was tough, both physically and mentally, a...
