Best Friends Day

A best friend is the very inner-sanctum of friendship.  Someone who knows most of our dirty baggage and still chooses to call us a friend.  I am very fortunate and blessed to have two such people in my life.  These two individuals have stuck with me through thick and thin, as I have had some very low points of failure as well as high points of success.  Thankfully the story of my life isn't consumed with only highs and lows.  Most of what I have experienced on this earth has been the steady progression of the status quo from one day to the other.  To have a best friend, I must in return become one.  Friendships are difficult to maintain and aren't forged overnight.  Most people mistake acquaintances for friends, and they are gravely mistaken as to the true reality of what they have.  Friendships of true intimacy are even harder to create and shape, but time and attention strengthens the bond between people.  When all three of us still lived in Houston, I would usually say if you saw one of us, chances were good you saw the other two.  Yes, we were definitely a trio, our own three musketeers.  Now we are all scattered: one remains in Houston, while the other lives in Austin, and I in Fort Worth.  However, we make a priority of seeing one another several times a year, whether individually or collectively.  Recently, my friend in Austin visited for a time of fellowship over dinner.  These are times of oasis that rejuvenate the soul.  I am thankful for my friends.  Happy Best Friends Day.
