Killians Irish Red
Most Wednesdays are fairly full in regard to the day's workload. This is why I treat myself to smoking a cigar on the front porch of the apartment. Yesterday was no exception. The alone time provides an opportunity for reflection, introspection, and maybe a good memory or two. One such memory was of my party days and the particular beer I would drink. My favorite beer (beer of choice) was George Killian Lett's Irish Red Lager (www.georgekillians.com). Many years ago, upon first moving to Houston, a friend of my then roommate introduced me to this beer at the local TGIFriday's, where we were having dinner one particular evening. From then on I fell in love with this beautifully crafted beverage. Of course there were other beers I would drink regularly, but Killians was always the default beer of choice. In the years to come, I would get in the habit of buying it by the case and keeping it at the apartment where I lived. Most of the time, a six-pack would cost roughly $6.50 to $7. To find it any cheaper would immediately cause me to purchase all the store had on-hand. One time the Wal-Mart in Victoria, Texas, had a six-pack of Killian's on sale for $4.50. Unbelievable! Really?! I pulled all that was on the beer cooler shelf, and then asked the stock person if there were any more in the back room. He replied there were four more cases of the product. After expressing my desire to purchase the remaining four cases, he eventually agreed to bring it to the cashier after a few moments of disbelief. Overall, I purchased five cases of Killian's Irish Red that day. A few weeks later, I saw the store offering the same price for the beer. So I went through the same routine of pulling all the store had to offer. However, this time, the stock person informed me there weren't anymore in the back room as some a**-hole had purchased them all a few weeks ago. Much to his chagrin, I revealed I was that a**-hole. Once he was over his embarrassment, we both had a good laugh about it. In 2006, I finally gave up drinking, but not without remembering the good times I had with friends and acquaintances over a good beer or adult beverage. The memory of Killian's Irish Red still lives large in my mind. In fact, I recently found a Killian's pint glass at a local thrift store. The glass now sits atop one of my bookshelves. Whenever I see it, I smile with many good memories floating in my mind. My friends, stay thirsty and drink Killian's.
