Employment
Exactly three years ago today I was hired at the smoke shop where I am currently employed. Unlike most jobs, I sort of fell in to this one. Upon moving to Fort Worth in February 2010, I stumbled across the shop a few months later in June. For the next two plus years, I was a regular customer of sorts frequently partaking of the wonderful cigar selection offered in the shop's humidor. Then one August day the owner of the store asked if I had ever considered working there. At the time I hadn't, but informed him I wasn't opposed to doing so. This was all he needed to hear in order to hire me, thus initiating me on a three year journey. Currently this is the longest continuous employment ever held. There have been other jobs in which I have worked three to four years, but they were broken in to several year to year and a half increments. Strange, huh? This doesn't mean I have always enjoyed the job or haven't tried to resign on several occasions. In these cases the manager will usually give me a few days to get whatever it is out of my system, and then I'll come back to work as if nothing had happened. No, this isn't a career, but overall the job has been fun and has provided a different industry to learn. Now I am not only a cigar smoker but also a pipe smoker. The future is laced with sadness as the store will close sometime within the next year. The building in which the store is located has been sold. With new ownership comes a new vision. This new vision involves turning the building in to a five-star hotel. Out with the old and in with the new. A new season of life is on the horizon as this season will end. Until then, I plan on riding the wave till other opportunities present themselves. Up for a smoke?
