Radical Changes!
Fairly recently I noticed a hyperglycemia description on my medical profile with the doctor. On April 19th, when I see the doctor again, I'll discuss to confirm the diagnosis, among other health issues. This came as a surprise as not much was talked about the designation before getting listed as a health concern. In looking up what this means, I wanted to see what the tell-tale signs were and how to address the issue. Hyperglycemia is when there is high blood sugar due to a lack of effective or failing insulin. (You may have heard of insulin resistance.) Among the signs given, I was able to check off in agreement a few of the manifestations: blurred vision, skin infections, frequent trips to the bathroom, and so much more. Knowledge is power, and a lot of the content was very revealing and now made a lot of sense. If I was younger, I would probably blow all this off and deal with it at a later age. Now that I am older, turning 50 in December, it is imperative I address my health before going blind and possibly passing away before my time. (Only God knows the day and time of when my soul will be required of me. For it is appointed once for a man, or woman, to die, and then judgement.) Wanting to become pro-active, I began to check out gym memberships. I had already looked into 24-Hour Fitness, which is a little over five miles away. They had a fairly good deal on membership for a year at $25 a month if I paid all of it up front. Feeling not quite comfortable about about the plan and their only location near me, I wanted to check out other options before pulling the trigger. Remembering some advice my mother gave me a while back, I visited the local YMCA in downtown Fort Worth. I fell in love! Their membership and inititaion fees were $39 and $25 respectively. Yes, the dues were a little bit more than I wanted to pay; however, I knew yours truly wouldn't take full advantage of what any gym would offer unless it was truly convenient to my schedule and where I lived. The Y is a straight shot down Hemphill till it turns into Lamar, the very street where the gym is located. In addition, they offered financial assistance for those who meet certain financial criteria. I applied and was approved for 50% off the monthly membership dues and 25% off the initial application fee and other programs. Hooray! I couldn't be more happy. Today marks the third day of exercise, and I can tell you-know-who is out of shape. I am sore, but, surprisingly, the only part of my body that doesn't hurt is my arthritic back. Of course, I expected it to flare up, but it didn't. In addition to excersising, I have been researching and planning on a radical change in diet to help combat hyperglecmia. Realizing I've been eating poorly all these years, I had to really check into what I could eat. Some may say "Yuck!" to eating healthy, and I am guilty of that same thought till I began to see the tasty foods I could eat. (Chicken, most vegatables, most fruits, anything with whole grain, peanut butter, and so much more to name a few.) What I have noticed is how much more it costs to eat healthy. No wonder people, myself included, opt for the run-of-the-mill diet of pizza, burritos, and other take-out foods. I'm excited about what the future holds and am already starting to feel better. All this will take discipline on my part along with prayer to beat my body into submission. The Apostle Paul talks about our body as a Temple of the Holy Spirit and the act of becoming a living sacrifice to our Father God in Heaven. This is my goal as I make radical changes in how I live. By living this new life, I can bring glory to the Sovereign Lord of the Universe. This is only the tip of the iceberg as I make other changes, mainly spiritual, in this life.
