Rest and Relaxation

There was a slight chance I would have had to work this morning at the bagel shop, but the backup baker came through for me in reporting for duty.  He didn't show up for work yesterday, and there was some concern no one would have the product ready for business when the store opened at 5 a.m.  Since I didn't get a day off last week, I was looking so forward to a day of rest and relaxation.  Thankfully, God has blessed me with time to mentally and emotionally re-coup from the previous few weeks of hard work.  Last week was the first week of the Kroger's (grocery store) four-week cycle.  This meant I had eight stores in which install marketing material.  Whenever these times roll around, I know a hard work week is ahead of me.  Due to God's sustaining and strengthening power, I made it to Friday.  Of course I was still sore and bone-weary, but I survived!  Today I am taking my neighbor on an errand.  He needs to travel downtown for a legal...

Martin Luther King Jr. -- Letter from a Birmingham Jail

16 April 1963 My Dear Fellow Clergymen: While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." Seldom do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would have little time for anything other than such correspondence in the course of the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. But since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I want to try to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms. I think I should indicate why I am here in Birmingham, since you have been influenced by the view which argues against "outsiders coming in." I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We ha...

Charles Spurgeon -- The Wedding Garment (February 19, 1871)

"And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen."—Matthew 22:11-14. Apparently the parable of the marriage feast would have been complete without this addition, but there was infinite wisdom in appending this sequel. This is seen practically in the experience of the church of God. Those who are permitted to see large additions to the church will find this parable of the wedding garment to be singularly appropriate and timely. Whenever there is a revival and many are brought to Christ, it seems inevitable that at the same time a proportion of unworthy persons should enter the church. However diligent may be the oversigh...

Calvin Coolidge -- Fifth Annual Message (December 6, 1927)

Members of the Congress: It is gratifying to report that for the fourth consecutive year the state of the Union in general is good. We are at peace. The country as a whole has had a prosperity never exceeded. Wages are at their highest range, employment is plentiful. Some parts of agriculture and industry have lagged; some localities have suffered from storm and flood. But such losses have been absorbed without serious detriment to our great economic structure. Stocks of goods are moderate and a wholesome caution is prevalent. Rates of interest for industry, agriculture, and government have been reduced. Savers and investors are providing capital for new construction in industry and public works. The purchasing power of agriculture has increased. If the people maintain that confidence which they are entitled to have in themselves, in each other, and in America, a comfortable prosperity will continue. CONSTRUCTIVE ECONOMY Without constructive economy in Government expenditures we sho...
